DeCalonTM (DCI) is a revolutionary non-chemical approach to eliminating mineral Scales, Corrosion and Biofilm growth in cooling water systems. Through applied electro-chemistry technology and a patented intelligent controller, DCI removes water hardness from cooling systems without the need for hazardous chemicals. The innovation provides a green technology solution descaling, corrosion and biofilm control for large HVAC cooling towers and industrial chillers.
The DCI device removes existing scale deposits and prevents further scale formation by driving a non-spontaneous redox reaction which precipitates CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2 at the cathode. The main minerals which causes scaling - Ca2+,, Mg2+ and SiO2 can then be removed out of the recirculating cooling water. The system operates continuously so design heat transfer efficiency is maintained at all times and routine system shut downs for cleaning and maintenance is greatly reduced. The continuous removal of minerals in the water greatly increase the operating Cycles of Concentration (CoC) and reduce makeup water usage for the cooling system.
The DCI device also has a chemical free CataGreenTM filter cartridge which inhibits the bacteria and Biofilm growth in the Cooling Tower and Chiller system.
DeCaIon Benefits:
The DeCaIon system is green technology chemical free water treatment in action which delivers many significant benefits:
Applications
The DCI unit is installed at the water cooling tower of Industrial Chiller System or HVAC system to treat water in the open recirculation loop.
A significant improvement in heat transfer and lower condenser approach temperatures leading to increased chiller operating efficiency
Industrial Chill Water System
Water Cooled HVAC Systems
How the DCI works
The DCI process is based on electrolysis and balancing electro chemistry in water. The process alters the chemical balance of cooling water which dissolves built up scales as a means of restoring the ionic equilibrium (Le Chatelier’s Principle) in the water. What differentiates the DCI is the Intelligent controller’s ability to remove scales sufficiently to maintain good heat transfer but not excessively to cause corrosion.
Reactions the cathode surface
Cathodic reduction Precipitation
The cathodic reduction reaction results in an excess of hydroxide ions in the boundary layer near the cathode surface. In the absence of buffer the pH rises. The high pH conditions (>10) only prevail near the cathode while the bulk of the water remains at the feed pH. The alkaline environment induces the precipitation of the Calcium and Magnesium scales in the form of CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2 according to…
SiO2 is also precipitated by similar reduction reaction.
The intelligent controller maintains the cell potential required to drive these non-spontaneous reduction reactions.
The precipitated Calcium, Magnesium and Silicon dioxide scales are automatically purged from the DCI
Reactions at the anode surface
A series of oxidation reactions occur at the anode resulting in the formation of gases and biocides, including small amount of chlorine and hydrogen peroxide.
